SYDNEY LOPEZ
SYDNEY LOPEZ, FOUNDER OF BARBADOS TENNIS
Sydney's interest in tennis began at the age of 10 when he was a ball boy. A year later, he was allowed to start playing the game—his achievements since have been phenomenal.
At 14, he won the National 14s, 16s, and 18s Championships in Barbados.
Sydney became the National Tennis Champion of Barbados at age 17. 1983, he was the Tennis Champion in Prince Edward Island, Canada. He coached in Thouro, Nova Scotia, for three years.
On his return to Barbados, he represented the country in the Davis Cup in 1992 and 1993 and became Captain of the Barbados team in 1995.
ENSURING EXCELLENCE IN THE SPORT IN BARBADOS
Since 2001, some of Barbados' top players have been coached exclusively by Sydney—most notably Darian King, who, as of February 2013, was ranked number 47 in the World Junior Ranking of the International Tennis Federation and number 484 in the ATP World Tour.
Sydney maintains his grip on the tennis scene by participating in International Tennis Federation coaching seminars and by attending United States Tennis Association (USTA) workshops and tournaments, including Wimbledon.
